  • Some people say that the lumps of coal in your stocking started in Holland in the 16th century. Before Christmas, children would put their clogs by the fireplace, if they received a lump of coal they had been bad but if they were good they got a small toy, cookies, or candy.
  • In England the lump of coal tradition started in the 19th century. Most of Europe was power by coal including the furnaces. The children of the rich families would get candy and toys in their stockings but for those who were poor they would get coal to heat their beds at night.
